Can CBD Get You High?

Posted by Claire Osborn on

Since CBD is a natural cannabinoid compound found in cannabis and hemp plants and is closely related to THC – the cannabinoid responsible for marijuana’s mind-altering effects – it’s natural to wonder if taking CBD will make you “high” in a similar way as ingesting THC would.

The short answer is no, CBD cannot get you high.

While CBD and THC are closely related and may occur in the same plant, CBD is non-psychoactive and doesn’t alter brain chemistry to induce feelings of well-being or heighten sensory perception in the same way as THC is known to do.

The reason lies in how differently CBD and THC react with the naturally occurring cannabinoid receptors in your brain. THC works by stimulating these receptors and causing a “high” feeling while CBD, on the other hand, works as an antagonist to block and calm those same receptors. This is why CBD is effective for easing your stress, managing inflammation and enhancing your sleep. When it comes to cannabinoids and their effects on mind and body, CBD and THC are essentially yin and yang.

While CBD may not produce psychoactive effects, some CBD products may still contain trace amounts of THC, particularly in states where cannabis is legal. To avoid THC altogether, look for CBD derived from 100% hemp or seek out brands such as Revana Collective that also use independent, third-party testing to verify every batch is THC-free.
