Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is extracted from hemp plants with the use of carbon dioxide. Hemp is placed in a pressurized chamber where it’s mixed with liquid CO2. The liquid strips away CBD from the plant material. After it’s removed from the chamber, the solution is heated to room temperature, causing the liquid CO2 to turn to gas and evaporate. What’s left is a highly concentrated CBD oil.
The extraction of CBD isn’t the first or last step of the process. Cultivating, harvesting, extracting and manufacturing the best CBD products requires careful planning and detail-oriented care.
Not all CBD products are made equal. For example, high-quality CBD products, such as the topicals and tinctures crafted by Revana Collective, are often made from natural ingredients. If you have benefitted from using CBD supplements, you may be curious as to how CBD is made into ready-to-use products.
Growing the Hemp
Hemp tends to grow best in moderate climates. The ideal temperature for growing hemp plants is around 75 degrees during the day and roughly 62 degrees at night. Hemp plants won’t thrive in extreme heat or cold, thus most U.S.-based hemp is grown in Oregon, Colorado, North Carolina and Kentucky.
Reputable hemp-growing companies like the Oregon-based Revana Collective test their soil for herbicides before sowing hemp seeds. Once the seeds are sowed, the hemp sprouts up in approximately 60 days.
Harvesting the Hemp
Hemp plants are typically harvested in October or early fall, depending on the crop’s geographic location. Before harvest can officially begin, crop samples must be tested by the local department of agriculture, such as the Oregon Department of Agriculture, to ensure there’s no more than 0.3 percent of THC in the plants.
The CBD extracted at Revana Collective is 100 percent THC free, meaning you’ll never have to worry about any psychoactive side effect or positive drug tests when using our products.
Harvested hemp plants are then cured or air dried. The process takes approximately three to four weeks. Following the drying phase, the flowers (which contain the most CBD) are separated from the rest of the plant and sent to labs to extract the CBD.
Extracting CBD from the Hemp Plant
Aside from the carbon dioxide method, there are a couple other ways to extract CBD from hemp flowers:
- Ethanol extraction: CBD oil is extracted by soaking the hemp in alcohol. Once the flower is drenched in ethanol, the solvent is either heated or cooled, which allows the CBD to separate from the alcohol.
- Oil extraction: The oil method is a popular choice among people looking to extract CBD at home. It involves cooking the hemp in a carrier oil, such as MCT oil, to extract the CBD from the cannabis flower.
Creating CBD Products
Once CBD has been extracted from the hemp, it’s ready to be mixed with other ingredients like flavors, herbs and carrier oils and turned into a ready-to-use CBD product.
There’s a diverse array of CBD products on the market depending on your needs and personal preferences. Some of the most popular products include tinctures, creams, gummies and even pet treats if your pet has anxiety or chronic pain.
At Revana Collective, our products are made with refined CBD, vitamins and natural aromatic blends of herbs like peppermint, sage or ashwagandha and essential oils for enhanced effects.
Third-Party Testing and Packaging
Before being released to consumers or retailers, CBD products should undergo third-party testing to ensure only pure, high-quality CBD was used. Third-party testing ensures accountability, as any CBD brand that wants to offer reputable lab-tested products must be transparent about their ingredients and methods of production.
You can rest assured knowing the CBD blends at Revana Collective are not only THC free but also third-party lab tested.
